Department of Engineering, ICT and Technologies for Energy and Transport Patent Title System and method for the measurement of the ƌĞůĂƟve posŝƟŽn of an object with respect to a point of reference. Ref. CNR 1445 Assignee(s): CNR CNR InsƟƚute: ISSIA Main Inventor: Arcangelo Distante Countries: US Priority date: 29/01/2001 Abstract The inveŶƟŽn refers to a system and a method for deteĐƟŶg the reůĂƟve posŝƟŽn of an object with respect to a pre-deĮned reference point. The method consists of the following steps: 1) acquisŝƟon of sequences of images, each one containing the reference point; 2) image processing for the deteĐƟon of the object; 3) ĐŽŵƉƵƚĂƟŽn of the ƌĞůĂƟve poƐŝƟŽn of the object with respect to the reference point. The system includes one or more sub-systems for the acquisŝƟŽn of images and one coŵƉƵƟŶg unit for processing the images. Background The inǀĞŶƟŽŶ is included ŝŶ ƚŚĞ ĮĞůĚ ŽĨ technologies aimed to assist the referees in the objeĐƟǀe evaluaƟon of dynamic events during sport matches; in parƟcular, it refers to the deƚĞĐƟŽŶ of the ƌĞůĂƟve posŝƟŽŶ of a ball with respect to a line of the playground. Technology Cameras with high frame rate acquire images in real Ɵme during sport matches and send them to a storage device; then, these images are processed in a ĐŽŵƉƵƟŶg unit. All the system hardware devices are at the state of the art and already available on the market. The system is ‘trained’ before the start of the match and, during the dynamic events, obtains and elaborates images in real Ɵŵe thanks to speciĮcally developed algorithms. Advantages and ApplicaƟons The main advantage of this invenƟon is that no modiĮĐĂƟon of playground and ball is required. Furthermore, the deteĐƟŽŶ of the dynamic events is robust and reliable because a geometric measure of the tri- dimensional posŝƟŽŶ of the ball is integrated with a quaůŝƚĂƟǀĞ measure of the observed event. So the inveŶƟŽn provides a high precision percentage and a very low error probability. Development stage The system has been successively updated and improved for the ghost-goal detecƟŽŶ during the soccer matches (ref. CNR 1731). 49
