Department of Engineering, ICT and Technologies for Energy and Transport Patent Title Mul layer catalyst, process for the prepara on and use thereof in the par al oxida on of hydrocarbons in gaseous phase. Ref. CNR 1559 Assignee(s): CNR CNR Ins ute: IRC Main Inventor: Stefano Cimino Countries: IT, EP, US, YV, CG Priority date: 28/05/2003 Abstract The inven on relates to a mul layer catalyst, a process for the prepara on and use thereof, for the produc on of light ole ns via the cataly c par al oxida on of para ns. Due to the strong interac on of the two ac ve phases, Pt and LaMnO , the catalyst performance is greatly enhanced, resul ng in higher 3 ethylene selec vity and higher conversion with respect to either Pt or LaMnO alone and with a superior 3 high temperature stability. With the novel catalyst the par al oxida on of para ns to obtain ole ns is approaching the breakthrough line for economic pro tability. Background Steam cracking of hydrocarbons has been and s ll is the main industrial technology for producing light ŽůĞĮŶƐ͕ ƚŚĞ ŵŽƐƚ ŝŵƉŽƌƚĂŶƚ ďƵŝůĚŝŶŐ ďůŽĐŬƐ ĨŽƌ ƚŚĞ ƉŽůLJŵĞƌƐ ĂŶĚ ǀĂƌŝĞƚLJ ŽĨ ŝŶƚĞƌŵĞĚŝĂƚĞƐ ŝŶĚƵƐƚƌLJ͘ ,ŽǁĞǀĞƌ͕ despite the technological improvements occurred in more than 50 years, Steam Cracking remains the most energy-consuming process in the petrochemical industry. Technology It is expected that the possibility to perform oxida ve dehydrogena on (ODH) or oxy-cracking of light alkanes through Short Contact Time-Cataly c Par al Oxida on (SCT-CPO) would lead to a novel technology with low capital investment, improved energy e ciency and reduced NOx and CO emissions. 2 Advantages and Applica ons dŚĞ ŶŽǀĞů ĐĂƚĂůLJƐƚƐ Wƚ;Ͳ^ŶͿͬ>ĂDŶKϯ ŚĂǀĞ ƉƌŽĚƵĐĞĚ ŽůĞĮŶƐ with yields exceeding 61 wt% and selec vity above 75 wt% per pass. It has been es mated that these reac vity features could result in reduced produc on cost of ethylene with respect to steam cracking. The main advantages result from the high ole n yields and the compact reactor system, that reduces the CO and NO emissions by avoiding large hea ng furnaces. 2 x Development stage Proof of concept and joint R&D ac vity (pre-pilot scale) between IRC-CNR and ENI.
