Department of Engineering, ICT and Technologies for Energy and Transport Patent Title Method and system for event detection and monito ring in a specific area in sport field. Ref. CNR 1876 Assignee(s): CNR FIGC CNR Institute: ISSIA Main Inventor: Arcangelo Distante Countries: IT Priority date: 01/10/2007 Abstract This invention refers to an intelligent visionbased system which is able to acquire, record and process image sequences in order to detect critical events in a specific area; in particular, the system is useful for monitoring the “penalty area” during a soccer match. It allows determining such events in a realtime and semiautomatic context, thanks to a notinvasive technique, compatible with the usual course of the matches. Background The invention refers to soccer matches, in which some specifically developed technologies con support match management for an objective evaluation of the dynamic events that occur during matches themselves, in a completely noninvasive and precise way. Technology The system uses high framerate cameras, that acquire up to 1000 images per second, in order to capture highly dynamic events. Sofware modules have been developed to detect the position of each moving objects and their interaction; the results are usable by means of a multimedia console. Advantages and Applications The system allows to overcome the limit of the human visual system that suffer from perspective errors, low temporal resolution and occlusions. Allowing an unlimited field of view, it avoids perspective errors as several points of view are used. Furthermore, reaction time is negligible. The system is not invasive for the field structures. Development stage The system has been developed as a prototype and has been installed into the Udine stadium for real validation. 85
