Department of Engineering, ICT and Technologies for Energy and Transport Patent Title A system to automatically detect sport events. Ref. CNR 1731 Assignee(s): CNR CNR Institute: ISSIA Main Inventor: Arcangelo Distante Countries: US, JP Priority date: 03/03/2006 Abstract This invention aims to introduce new technologies able to detect in real time Goal/No Goal events during soccer matches and point out them to the referee or linesman. The system does not require neither modification of the ball or fixed installation in the playingfield components (posts, crossbar, etc) nor suspension of the match. It automatically detect Goal/no Goal events and con support the final decision upon said events by match management. Background The invention refers to soccer matches, in which some specifically developed technologies con support match management for an objective evaluation of the dynamic events that occur during matches themselves, in a completely noninvasive, automatic and precise way. Technology The system uses 4 digital high performance cameras (capable to process and record up to 200 images per second) placed on the infrastructure of the stadium with the optical axes parallel to the post plane. For estimating the space position and the related dynamics of a moving ball, the system is provided with hardware and sofware components for equiring, recording, displaying and processing images. The goal event is communicated by radio, in realtime, to the referee with no game interruption. Advantages and Applications The system allows to overcome the limit of the human visual system that suffer from perspective errors, low temporal resolution and occlusions. The proposed systems, instead, considering the multiple views of the same scene and the special location of the high resolution digital cameras, guarantees no perspective errors, high temporal resolution and occlusion avoidance. The system is not invasive for the field structures. Development stage The system has been developed as a prototype and has been installed into the Udine stadium for real validation and for the approval by FIFA. 83
