The workshop is a formal activity of the European Consortium of Mathematics in Industry (ECMI)\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/ecmiindmath.org\/special-interest-groups\/implantable-devices-and-drug-delivery-systems\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Special Interest Group on Implantable Devices &amp; Drug Delivery Systems<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/section>\n<section id=\"other\">\n<div class=\"container\">\n<div class=\"row\">\n<div class=\"col-lg-12\">\n<p class=\"other-t mb-0\">This event will build on the highly successful previous editions of\u00a0<span class=\"bold-blu\">MEDDS<\/span>\u00a0(<i>Modelling &amp; Experiments in Drug Delivery Systems<\/i>), which took place in Coimbra (2016) and Glasgow (2018, sponsored by ECMI), as well as on symposia at\u00a0<span class=\"bold-blu\">ECMI2016<\/span>\u00a0(<i>Applied Mathematics in Stent Development<\/i>),\u00a0<span class=\"bold-blu\">ECMI2018<\/span>\u00a0(<i>Mathematical Modelling in Biomedical applications<\/i>),\u00a0<span class=\"bold-blu\">SIMAI2018<\/span>\u00a0(<i>Advances in Mathematical Modeling in Biology and Medicine<\/i>),\u00a0<span class=\"bold-blu\">ECMTB2018<\/span>\u00a0(<i>Recent trends in the modeling and control of the glucose-insulin system<\/i>), with an added emphasis on industrial and clinical problems.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/section>\n<section id=\"presentation\">\n<div class=\"container\">\n<div class=\"row\">\n<div class=\"col-lg-12\">\n<p class=\"present-h-p\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Mathematical models and computer simulations<\/strong>\u00a0are playing an increasingly important role in medicine, since they represent a useful tool to complement theoretical and experimental work. Moreover, models pave the way for investigating control problems consisting of personalized approaches for patient treatment.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"img-fluid float-right max-width: 50% height: auto alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/www.biomatematica.it\/mchbs2021\/images\/present_1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"450\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"present-h-p\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">Smart healthcare and medical devices have become common in clinical everyday use. Popular examples include\u00a0<i>insulin pumps, inhalers and ventilators for breathing conditions, as well as implants, microcapsules and nanoparticles for drug delivery<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"present-h-p\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">Many of these technologies are controlled drug delivery systems, combining a platform or a carrier with a drug to be delivered efficiently to a target tissue or organ, while maintaining the dose within a therapeutic window.<\/p>\n<p class=\"present-h-p\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">While many have achieved successful results clinically, there remain a number of scientific and technological challenges and an opportunity for further fine-tuning and optimization.
